Sullivan man sought by police

Union County authorities are searching for a man who assaulted a police officer and then fled from the area.

Sturgis Police Officer Eric McCallister said Jake W. Cowan, 28, Sullivan, is wanted for second-degree assault on a police officer, first-degree fleeing/evading police, resisting arrest, disregarding a stop sign, failure to produce insurance card and driving on a suspended/revoked license.

McCallister said he stopped Cowan for disregarding a stop sign. Further investigation revealed that Cowan was wanted on other charges. When McCallister tried to take Cowan into custody, "Cowan struck Officer McCallister in the face and fled on foot," a news release said.

Police are still trying to locate Cowan.
