KSP warns of old scam resurfacing

Kentucky State Police Post 2 in Madisonville is advising the public of a scam that is not new, but has resurfaced in the area.

The victim contacted the KSP on Tuesday after receiving a phone call. The male caller advised the victim that he was an officer with the U.S. Embassy and that a relative had been arrested in Mexico. The caller instructed the victim to send money via Western Union for their relative’s bond. The caller re-contacted the victim today and instructed the victim to send more money.

The phone number is possibly Canadian, and it appears the money was transferred to an account in the Dominican Republic.

At the present time, this is the only report of this type of scam received by Post 2.

To report a possible scam, please contact the KSP Post 2 Madisonville at (270) 676-3313 or toll-free, in Kentucky, at (800) 222-5555 or contact your local law enforcement agency.
