KSP involved in Lyon County shooting

During the early morning hours today, Kentucky State Police executed a search warrant at a residence on Bryson Road in Eddyville. Trooper's knocked on the door, identified themselves as police officers and made their presence known. John C. Smith, 51, of Eddyville, reportedly came to the door and pointed a handgun and a laser pointing device at the troopers.

Smith allegedly refused several verbal commands to drop his weapon , and he was shot by a trooper in the abdomen area. Smith was transported by the Lyon County EMS to Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, where he has undergone surgery for his injury and is recovering in ICU.

KSP recovered approximately 10 ounces of crystal meth with a street value of $18,000 from the residence along with several guns and a large amount of cash. Smith will be charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine more than 2 grams), second offense, with a firearm enhancement; possession of a handgun by a convicted felon; possession of marijuana; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Patricia A. Kilgore, 41 of Eddyville, was charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine more than 2 grams) with a firearm enhancement, first offense; possession of marijuana; and possession of drug paraphernalia. Kilgore was lodged in Caldwell County Jail.

Detective Donald Bowman continues his drug investigation and Detective Lt. Trent Weaver, along with lieutenants from two other KSP posts, are continuing their investigation into the trooper-involved shooting.

KSP was assisted on the scene by the Eddyville Police Department, Lyon County Sheriff's Office and Marshall County Sherriff's Office.
