State investigation finds Marion tap water safe

In response to two official complaints made to the Division fo Water, investigators from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet were dispatched to Marion on Wednesday where water tests were conducted.

Robin Hartman, spokesperson for the cabinet, said Marion’s water is safe to drink based on tests done today.

The complaints were filed late Tuesday.

Hartman said the City of Marion had already begun flushing the water distribution system by the time Division of Water officials arrived here this morning for testing.

The complaints, Hartman said, were that the water was dark in color and smelled of chlorine.

“It seems to be fine from our testing,” Hartman explained. “Our testing found it to be odorless and colorless.”

The testing on Wednesday could not determine whether the water was substandard prior to flushing.

City officials have maintained that its drinking water has been safe, yet have also acknowledged the existence of issues with smell and taste. The city has also acknowledged that the problem has caused inconveniences throughout the city, particularly with commercial operations such as restaurants.

City administrator: Water safe to drink

Marion City Administrator Adam Ledford insists the city's water is safe to drink despite pockets of Marion still enduring a taste and smell that is a little off.

Following last night's special city council meeting, Ledford spoke on the city's efforts to correct the problem that has endured about 10 days or so. After changing the treatment process to adjust for summer temperatures that affect contaminant levels that naturally occur in the city's reservoir and flushing the city's entire system of lines and storage tanks, Ledford said it could take a couple more days to level off. So water should be back to normal by the end of the week.

The city administrator acknowledge the problem has caused inconveniences throughout the city, but said water is tested every day to ensure safety. There has been no danger to people or animals, he said.

City says water is okay despite color, taste

We know there's a great deal of conversation in the community about the drinking water in Marion. The Press had an article last week in which the city addressed the matter. In case you missed it, the article is below.

City leaders acknowledge something has been a little off with Marion’s drinking water in the last few days, but reiterated it is safe to use and corrective measures are being taken.

“There is nothing wrong about the (safety) of the water; it’s all about the taste,” City Administrator Adam Ledford told elected officials at the May 20 meeting of Marion City Council.

Ledford said he and water department workers believe it is the change in weather that led to some discoloration and a “muddy” taste to water from the city’s taps over the weekend.

It’s not uncommon at this time of year. As temperatures rise, treating the water from Lake George, the city’s main reservoir, requires a different combination of chemicals and processes.

“As seasons change, chlorination and the chemical process changes, and we may need to make adjustments,” Ledford said. “We’re pretty confident that’s what we’re dealing with.”

Those adjustments continued to be made.

Rockets fall to Christian in regional tournament

Coach Denis Hodge visits with starting pitcher Payton
Riley in the first inning of Monday's regional game.
Crittenden County fell behind early and lost 13-1 to defending champion Christian County in Monday's Second Region Tournament quarterfinal matchup at Morganfield.

Despite the loss, the Rockets went 18-17, were close to setting a school record in wins this season and had one of the team's few winning seasons since 1980. Senior Payton Riley was also close to the school record in stolen bases.

For all the details, see this week's printed edition of The Crittenden Press.

Lyon County road closing for work

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to close a section of KY 1943 in Lyon County just south of the Crittenden County line during daylight hours for full-width paving starting tomorrow.

Milling and paving along KY 1943 runs from the Skin Frame Creek Bridge at milepoint 3.432 extending eastward to the US 641 intersection at milepoint 6.94, a distance of about 3.5 miles.

Paving along KY 1943 is expected to take about two or three days to complete, weather permitting. That means the road will be closed Tuesday through about Wednesday or Thursday. The contractor will work to provide access to homeowners on each side of the closure point.

Jim Smith Contracting is the prime contractor on this $413,766 group highway improvement project.

Motorists should use appropriate caution where equipment, flaggers, and construction personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.

The City of Marion will be conducting a systematic flushing of water lines starting today at roughly 9 p.m. The flushing of hydrants will take place in different areas across town for a few hours each night through Sunday evening.

Marion alcohol sales approved by voters

The second alcohol referendum in just more than three years was successful in Marion balloting today.

Voters in the five Marion precincts on Tuesday opted to legalize package sales and liquor by the drink in the city. The vote was 403-277 to make alcohol sales legal.

A measure to allow liquor by the drink only in Marion failed in March 2016 by a count of 245-298.

Early votes favor 'Yes' on alcohol sales

With one precinct and absentees reporting, those wanting to legalize alcohol sales in Marion have a louder voice, with a vote total of 33-27. The first precinct reporting, Marion No. 6, voted in favor of approving alcohol sales in 2016 and did so again this year. There are still four precincts left to report, however.

Owl survey takes aim at Crittenden County

Owl biologist Kate Slankard says Crittenden County’s small-farm settings and its Amish community make it a primary focus of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources’ barn owl survey.

Over the next couple of months, Slankard and other fish and wildlife officials will be following up on barn owl sightings. They’ve been to Crittenden County quite often and have found several nesting sites. The barn owl is quite rare in Kentucky and Slankard said the survey is helping wildlife biologists to understand why.

The owl study is done every three years. In 2016, Crittenden County was among the top counties in the state for authenticated barn owl nests.

For more about this survey read this week's printed edition of The Crittenden Press. You may also call the KDFWR at 1-800-858-1549 and a wildlife biologist is likely to come confirm it.

Observers can also email Slankard at kate.slankard@ky.go. The owls are sensitive to disturbance, so if a nest is found, it’s best to leave it alone to avoid attracting attention to it. Researchers are careful to document nests without disturbing the owls.

Turkey harvest rebounds a bit this spring

Crittenden County’s turkey harvest, at a modern-low in 2018, has rebounded to more moderate numbers this spring.

The three-week gobbler season ended recently with hunters taking 344 birds, the second lowest harvest this century, but still considerably better than last year’s alarmingly-low take. Good weather and more mature males helped boost the harvest.
