2 traffic deaths in Crittenden in 2019

Fatal traffic accidents were down markedly in 2019 in the seven-county Kentucky State Police Post 2 Area, which includes Crittenden County.

There were no fatal crashes reported in the Post 2 District in December 2019 and 28 for the whole year.

There were no automobile motorists killed in traffic crashes in Crittenden County in 2019, but one passenger on a motorcycle died as a result of a crash on Ky. 135 and a Marion woman died when a truck crashed into her home on Old Morganfield Road.

Rob Austin, spokesman for the state police in Post 2, said ... for the rest of this article, see the Jan. 30, 2020 printed edition of The Crittenden Press.

Four Chaplains service in Salem Sunday

American Legion Post 217 of Burna will present its annual Four Chaplains Service at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Salem on Sunday.

The service will begin at 11 a.m. All veterans in the area are invited to attend, along with community members who are interested in hearing an emotional service.

American Legion posts nationwide remember Four Chaplains Day with memorial services that pay tribute to the courageous chaplains and the brave young men who lost their lives on that fateful night during World War II. This will be the 77th anniversary of the sinking of the United States Army transport Dorchester and the selfless acts of four U.S. Army chaplains aboard. The Dorchester tragically sunk on Feb. 3, 1943, while crossing the North Atlantic, transporting troops to an American base in Greenland.

“As we remember this tragic event, remember today those who continue in the work of our country to see we have the freedoms we have today,” said Faye Gibson, of the Legion’s auxiliary. “Freedom is not free. May God continue to bless our military and our country.”

Narcan training Thursday in Eddyville

Four accidental overdoses in one weekend in Lyon County earlier this month has prompted quick efforts by the Pennyrile District Health Department to educate and train the public on the benefits of Narcan, the life-saving drug that reverses the effects of drug overdose.

A training at the Lyon County Convention Center at Lee Jones Park in Eddyville will be offered from 3-6 p.m., Thursday (today). Free Narcan kits will be given to those attending the training, which only takes 10-15 minutes.
Jim Tolley, interim director of the Pennyrile District Health Department, said Narcan has a very high rate of saving lives. He said the Lyon County overdoses happened to adults ages 30-60.

“These kits are not just for addicts, and the sooner they are administered the better,” Tolley said.

Boil water advisory lifted

The City of Marion has just lifted the boil water advisory inside the city limits.

The advisory was issued Wednesday when state workers hit a water line on Old Salem Road.

The interruption of water service caused the dismissal of school in Crittenden County on Thursday.

City Administrator Adam Ledford said at 2:25 p.m., Thursday the city was alerted that the test samples were approved, allowing city officials to cancel the boil water advisory.

More work on Main Street

Once Harper Construction has completed its concrete curb and gutter work on the south end of Main Street, the state contractor plans to move its crew to the other side of the courthouse square for additional improvements on North Main Street.

Curb and gutter replacements along Main Street began in early November.

As work is completed on the south side, crews will move to an area recently marked by cones on the east side of North Main Street.

The additional work will be in front of McDonald’s and traffic will be reduced to one-lane and flagged while construction is underway.

Boil Water Update for City of Marion

Marion City Administrator Adam Ledford says the boil water order issued earlier today was in response to a broken water distribution line on Old Salem Road, near the high school campus.

Repairs have already been made and the system is being recharged, Ledford said.

The boil order will resume until at least 4pm on Thursday. Safe Drinking Water Guidelines require boil orders to be in place for 24 hours following such an incident.

School in Crittenden County has been cancelled for Thursday due to the boil order. Superintendent Vince Clark said it would be nearly impossible to prepare about 1,300 students their school meals and keep fresh drinking water available throughout the school day without water from the tap.

Pictured are crews who were working on the water line late Wednesday afternoon.

School cancelled Thursday; Boil Water

Crittenden County School District has cancelled all classes for Thursday due to a water issue in Marion.

Marion city officials announced a boil water order early Wednesday afternoon after a six-inch distribution line was damaged during roadside construction on Old Salem Road near the high school and middle school campus.

School Superintendent Vince Clark said that because of the boil water situation, all county schools will be closed on Thursday. It will be considered a Rocket Way NTI Day. High school students should do the first "A Day" NTI day assignments.

NTI is a Non-Traditional Instruction option that allows students to work from home. The school district is allowed to use 10 NTI days per year and they do not have to be made up later in the school year.

Boil water advisory issued

At around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, the City of Marion issued a boil water advisory.

State workers hit a 6-inch pipe on Old Salem Road, prompting the water department to issue the advisory, according to city clerk Layten Croft.

No indication of the duration for the boil water recommendation has been given. Check back for updates.

Legislative Highlights from this week in Frankfort

News from the Kentucky General Assembly

The pace of action in Frankfort for this 60-day legislative session has been fairly brisk as several measures took steps forward in the lawmaking process this past week include the following:

“Born alive” act. Senate Bill 9 would require that no infant born alive – including one that survives a failed abortion attempt – be denied appropriate medical care. Violation of the proposed law could result in the revocation of a medical provider’s license and felony charges. The bill was approved by the Senate Veterans, Military Affairs, and Public Protection Committee on Thursday and now goes to the full Senate for consideration.

Youth smoking and vaping. Senate Bill 56 would specify in state law that anyone under 21 years old is not allowed to possess tobacco products and vaping products. This would place state law in line with recently approved federal law regarding youth smoking and vaping. Under Senate Bill 56, officers could confiscate such products from people not old enough to use them

Learn to identify drug use in teens

Crittenden County Attorney Rebecca Johnson says Monday's program at the Marion Ed-Tech Center is a must-attend for parents, grandparents, guardians or anyone who wants to know more about recognizing subtle hints of drug usage, particularly among youngsters.

Johnson says the program should appeal to every parent whether they have suspicions about drug use or not.

Master Trooper Corey King of the Kentucky State Police will make the presentation. He is a 19-year veteran of the state police and is assigned to Post 16 in Henderson. He resides in Owensboro.

The purpose of this workshop is to ensure that parents and other authorities receive adequate information needed to recognize when a person, especially an adolescent, may be using drugs, Johnson said. The goal is to increase early intervention rates by supplying parents and other authorities with the knowledge and tools necessary to identify the warning signs of drug usage; thereby decreasing the probability that the person will continue drug usage or develop a drug addiction.

The program will have some primary objectives it plans to meet, including helping attendees learn to identify the current, most prevalent drugs, recognize physical and emotional symptoms of drug usage, recognize the material signs of drug usage and understand the importance of early intervention.

There will be snacks and drawings at the event. No reservation is need and the program is free.

Local prosecutor weighs in on truth in sentencing

It is no secret that incarceration costs have been a driving force with legislative action over the last several years in Kentucky and other states. As jail costs have skyrocketed and other economic concerns have presented major budget constraints for Kentuckians, our state legislature has sought radical changes in the Kentucky Penal Code and administrative regulations. Some of these changes have been very transparent and others have not.

One of the ways the legislature has sought to save money is a mandate of deferred prosecution or presumptive probation for drug possession cases. In addition, the legislature cut the penalty time back from 1-5 years for possession of schedule II narcotics such as heroin, cocaine or methamphetamine to 1-3 years for the ... Flooding expected over next 3 days

Winds are already picking up in Crittenden County, and rain will soon follow.

Forecasters are warning of potential record rainfall starting tonight and continuing through Saturday.

There is a chance for a three-day total in excess of six inches of rain with accompanying 30-50mph winds.

With a forecast of heavy rainfall into the weekend, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) encourages everyone to get ready for the possibility of flooding.

“Flooding can happen anytime, even in winter months,” said FEMA Region V Administrator James K. Joseph. “Make sure your family knows how to stay safe before extreme weather occurs – don’t attempt to walk or drive through flowing water and verify your mobile phone is enabled to receive Wireless Emergency Alerts to warn you of dangerous conditions and other emergencies in your area.”

Stay tuned to The Press Online for any updates as this weather event moves through the area, including the status of the Cave In Rock Ferry service and road closures.

Judge anticipates push for 2A Sanctuary here

Crittenden County Judge-Executive Perry Newcom anticipates a grassroots movement here to compel local leaders to explore making this community a Second Amendment Sanctuary.

A wave of communities across Kentucky, and beyond, have been adopting measures that they hope will insulate them from potentially stricter, future gun laws.

Whether local governmental action of this fashion would have any buoyancy against future state or federal law remains to be seen. However, the push is real and Newcom says he will be prepared for it as soon as next week when county magistrates convene for their regular monthly meeting.

Young vocalists, actors sought for musical

A spring musical is coming to Marion’s big stage.

It’s uncertain the title, but a condensed version of a Broadway musical will be presented in late April by middle and high school students.

Auditions for the hour-long musical will be held between 5:30-7:30 p.m., Jan. 14 at Fohs Hall.

Directing the production will be vocal instructor Michelle Crider. Her husband Corey, an operatic baritone, will assist with stage choreography.
