U.S. 641 and Ky, 91 are closed in the Fredonia area of Caldwell County because a car struck a utility pole at the north edge of the town.
Passenger vehicles are being detoured down side streets while a utility crew replaces the damaged pole. There is no detour available for big trucks, so they will have to wait.
Fredonia Fire Department and Caldwell County Sheriff's Department are handling traffic control.
Transportation officials say the road could be closed about an hour.

Roads doubly treacherous
Besides the slush, roads are doubly treacherous because of flooding due to drainage areas being clogged with ice.
Reports of power outages coming in
As the freezing rain continues to fall on Crittenden County, as of about 6:30 p.m., Kenergy is reporting small pockets of power outages in both the Mattoon and Frances areas. Meantime, Kentucky Utilities Co. is reporting a few outages in the Crayne area.
Crittenden County Courthouse is open as a warming center for those suffering through extended outages.

It appears that an SUV slid off the highway and one person may be trapped inside. One person got out of the vehicle.

UPDATE: Kentucky State Police are urging people to stay off the highways if at all possible. Conditions are worsening by the minute. If you have to be out, drive slow and buckle up.
Due to inclement weather, all offices of Farmers Bank & Trust Co. will be closing at 1 p.m. today.
The Peoples Bank will also be closing both of its offices at 2 p.m.
Marion City Hall is closing at 2 p.m.
There will be no meeting tonight at the Masonic lodge.

District court cancelled for Wednesday
There will be no district court in Crittenden County Wednesday. Notices will be sent to defendants for rescheduled court appearances.
Another winter storm warning issued
The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a winter storm warning which is in effect from noon today to 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Mixed wintry precipitation will spread across portions of southern Illinois, western Kentucky and southwest Indiana this afternoon and continue into tonight.
Moderate to heavy snow is expected generally north of a line from Vienna, Ill., to Evansville, Ind., where amounts of 3 to 5 inches are expected with locally higher totals possible. Further south, the snow will be mixed with sleet, generally along and near the Ohio River where 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet is forecast. South of a line from Paducah to Owensboro, a mix of sleet and freezing rain is expected. In this area, up to a quarter-inch of ice will be accompanied by some sleet accumulation as well.
Significant travel impacts are probable. Where icing occurs, it could have an impact on trees and power lines.

No school on Tuesday
Crittenden County school officials have called off classes for Tuesday due to poor road condition throughout the county.
KyTC issues travel update
Travel remains difficult across most of the region.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews are making some headway on "A" snow priority routes as the snow has stopped or trailed off to flurries at most locations.
KyTC continues to urge the public to avoid unnecessay travel as many "B" and "C" snow priority routes are snow covered.

Area death
Jewell Dean Pugh, 89, of Marion died Feb. 1, 2014, at Salem Springlake Care Center. Gilbert Funeral Home in Marion is in charge of arrangements.

Ferry reopen to traffic
The Cave-In-Rock Ferry is open today. The ferry resumed service on the regular service schedule at 6 a.m. today.
The Cave-In-Rock Ferry had been closed due to heavy ice on the Ohio River since just before noon on Wednesday. At that time, the river was about 75 to 80 percent covered between the banks by a large mass of floating ice. Area river pilots indicated it was the heaviest icing problem since about 1975.
Ferry operator Lonnie Lewis says the ice is gone this morning thanks to warmer weather.

Winter storm watch upgraded to warning

Snow plows will likely be on the roads in Crittenden County
Sunday as a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow is
expected to fall throughout the day and into the early morning
hours on Monday. |
Accoring to NWS, rain will change to snow as temperatures drop today behind a cold front. Snow will continue from late this afternoon into the evening and overnight hours. Accumulations of 1 to 2 inches will be commonplace, but locally higher amounts in the warning area may produce accumulations of 3 or 4 inches.
At times snow may mix with rain or change to sleet. If the surface temperature happens to be 32 or less and it is raining, then a brief period of freezing rain may occur. The mix of snow, rain and sleet with a brief possibility of freezing rain may last throughout the day. Temperatures drop best late today and overnight and that is when all precipitation will change to snow for good and significant accumulations will commence.
The combination of snow, sleet and falling temperatures will create very hazardous travel conditions this afternoon and tonight.
