David Kimberly “Bro” Robinson, 60, of Marion died Thursday. The funeral is Monday at Gilbert Funeral Home.

Tommy Hughes, 66, of Marion died Thursday at his home. The funeral is Sunday afternoon. Myers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Highway mowing to pick up next week

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and state highway maintenance crews plan to ramp up mowing activities along highways across the region starting on Monday.

Crews will be mowing along interstates, parkways, and federal highways, as well as many rural secondary highways. Mowing crews will be working during daylight hours about anytime weather allows.

A contract mowing crew will start at Interstate 24 near the Ohio River Bridge on Monday and work eastward. Once all 93 miles of I-24 are completed, the crew will move to the Purchase Parkway with a goal of finishing up by about mid-November if weather permits.

Litter pickup crews will be working in advance of contract mowing crews along major routes.

Please use appropriate caution when you encounter a mowing zone. Mower operators often have maneuver into travel lanes as they go about their work cutting grass along state right of way. This creates a potential conflict with passing traffic.

Due to the level of activity, mowing zones should be approached with the same level of caution as other work zones. Slow down, put down your cell phone, and pay close attention to what is ahead of you.

Daylight Saving Time ends Nov. 2

Daylight Saving Time will come to an end on Nov. 2 as the nation switches back to Standard Time.

The change, as usual, will be at 2 a.m. but most people change their clocks before going to bed the evening before, which in this case, will be Nov. 1.

A change in federal law switched the start and stop of Daylight Saving Time to March and November several years ago. Yet outdated information about the time change weekends continues to circulate on social media sites, such as Facebook.

We'll change back to Daylight Saving Time in early March 2015.

Warm fall weather coming to western Kentucky

If your fragile flora made it through this morning's chill they should live to see Halloween and - better yet - some sunny days in between. Although western Kentucky typically experiences its first freeze by about the third or fourth week of October, warmer weather patterns will give local residents and their gardens freeze-free nights for the foreseeable future.

SCHOOL BOARD: Work Session Thursday

The Crittenden County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly working session at 6 p.m., Thursday at the Board of Education Office on campus.

The school board's regular monthly meeting will be next Tuesday at 6 p.m., at the CCMS library.

Lady Rockets open regional play today

Crittenden County's Lady Rockets soccer team will be playing in its first regional tournament ever today at Madisonville.

The Rockets girls finished second in the Fifth District Tournament last week after winning the regular-season crown.

CCHS will play Hopkinsville in the Second Region opener.

U.S. 60 traffic flow in Union County affected by work zone

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans establish a work zone along a section of U.S. 60 in Union County on Monday.

The work zone at U.S. 60 milepoint 11.75 is for the construction of a turning lane at the entrance to Union County Hospital and the Union County Technical Center. This is along U.S. 60 between Sturgis and Morganfield just west of the high and middle school entrance.

Initial clearing and excavation work on Monday and Tuesday will be away from the existing travel lanes with few opportunities for traffic disruptions. However, starting on Wednesday, the contractor will restrict traffic to one lane of travel with alternating flow controlled by flaggers during daylight hours.

The contractor plans limit construction activity so as to minimize travel disruptions during hours of heavy traffic to and from the nearby schools. The contractor will also maintain access to the hospital.

Motorists should be alert for equipment, flaggers, and construction personnel along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow. Appropriate caution is required.

Approximately 4,000 vehicles travel this section of U.S. 60 in Union County in an average day.

Rame Contracting LLC is the prime contractor on this $430,120 project. The contractor expects to have construction completed by about Nov. 26, weather permitting.

T.O.N.E-z coming to Fohs Hall Nov. 22

The hip-hop artist T.O.N.E-z, banned from singing at last week's high school football game, has been booked for a live performance at Fohs Hall on Nov. 22.

The rapper posted on his Twitter account this afternoon that he was coming back to western Kentucky to perform "live on stage."

Fred Stubblefied, of the Fohs Hall Community Arts Foundation, confirmed Friday evening that the rapper would indeed be performing next month along with local band Big Atomic. 

Big Atomic was already scheduled to play at Fohs Hall that night, and the Community Arts Foundation added the Emmy-nominated T.O.N.E-z to the lineup in the aftermath of last week's late cancellation. Concerned parents and members of the faith-based community led a charge to have the rapper's appearance stopped just hours before it was scheduled last Friday.

Fohs Hall is a civic and community building about a block from downtown Marion. It hosts several concerts and other performing arts programs each year. Stubblefield said Fohs Hall seats 455 and will hold a few more, standing room only. Tickets will be sold in advance for $5. Concessions will be sold. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to special needs children, Stubblefield said.

Stubblefield said the singer will perform a short set, including songs with non-explicit lyrics. 

It was explicit lyrics found in some of his songs and music videos that created last week's uprising.
