Schools back in session Thursday

Crittenden County Schools will be back in session Thursday. Classes were dismissed Tuesday and today for widespread illness.

This week's newspaper is loaded

The Crittenden Press is loaded this week with updates on stories that we have been following for a few days, including the widespread flooding. But there's lots more you haven't seen or heard about before today!

In defending their work, members of the Kentucky Legislature often repeat an age-old quote first uttered by a European statesman: “If you like laws and sausages, you should never watch either one being made.”

This week The Crittenden Press will bring you a sampling of both. Follow us to the eastern segment of the county to watch the Kentucky Boones make sausage on Page 1 and on Page 2 you can find out what your local lawmakers are doing in Frankfort during the current session of the Kentucky General Assembly.

Plus, there's always sports and other news you can get nowhere else, such as the new rates for getting rid of your garbage. See these and other interested and entertaining articles in The Crittenden Press.

Schools closing Tuesday and Wednesday for sickness

Crittenden County Schools will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday due to an outbreak of illness that has affected students, teachers and staff.

The school district made the announcement at 1pm today and also said there will be no after-school activities today or for the next two while classes are cancelled. The only exception will be the boys' basketball team playing in the regional tournament at Madisonville and the Girls Regional Tournament which will begin Wednesday night at Rocket Arena.

"Our custodial staff is taking measures to make sure surfaces at school are sanitized, and we encourage you to do the same at home. This would be a great opportunity to wash jackets, hats, backpacks, lunchboxes, etc. to help us fight the spread of influenza. You may choose to use Clorox wipes if washing is not recommended," the school said in a news release.

Tuesday's missed school day will be made up Monday, April 8 at the end of spring break. Wednesday's missed day will be a Rocket Way Flu Day/NTI day.

Truck strikes backhoe, flips in town

Update: The driver of the pickup has been identified as Dakota Koerner of Marion.

Original Post
The driver of a Dodge pickup appeared to be okay, but rescue squad members had to cut him out of the cab after the vehicle flipped on East Bellville Street at about 8:30am today.

While the investigation is still ongoing, it appears that the pickup was heading east when it struck a glancing blow against a City of Marion backhoe doing work on the right side of the street. The truck then overturned.

The backhoe operator was not injured.

Bagging at Smithland against the Ohio River

The Ohio River continues to threaten homes and in the case of this photo, the City of Smithland in Livingston County.

Sand bags have been placed along the riverfront to keep the swollen river from encroaching upon more property.

A short, in-town detour was set up in Smithland on Wednesday because high water had closed US 60 at one point in the town. However, that closure has now ended and traffic is moving through Smithland on US 60.

Schools dismissing today at 1pm

Crittenden County Schools will be sending students home today at 1pm due to the threat of wintry weather.

All after-school activities are cancelled, including tonight’s basketball games.

Wintry weather expected today, flooding continues

A winter weather advisory has been posted by the National Weather Service NWS for western Kentucky from noon today through 3 a.m. Saturday, and flood warning remains in effect.

Mixed precipitation is expected with total snow and sleet accumulations of up to 3 inches are expected, generally along and north of a line from Greenville, Mo., to Greenville, Ky. Farther south, ice accumulations averaging around 0.1 inches are expected.

Precipitation will begin first in southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois early this afternoon and then progress eastward to include the entire region by sunset. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the afternoon and evening commute home from school and work. Travel conditions will deteriorate during evening.

Temperatures and sunshine Saturday should help reduce the effects of the wintry mix. The high for Saturday is expected to be 39, with mostly sunny skies all day. However, very light freezing rain and snow will be possible Saturday night from the Ozark Foothills through southern Illinois and the Evansville Tri State. Isolated slick spots may develop on bridges and untreated roads.

Flooding, ferry
A flood warning remains in effect for Crittenden County and all western Kentucky counties bordering the Ohio River. Minor to moderate flooding is forecast on most area rivers, with some not expected to crest until well into next week.

The Cave In Rock Ferry remains closed due to high water on the Ohio River. NWS forecasts the river at Shawneetown, Ill., to begin falling Wednesday morning based on past precipitation and the precipitation amounts expected approximately 48 hours into the future from the forecast issuance time. As currently forecast, the ferry could possibly open as early as Monday, Feb. 25.
Written drivers’ tests are administered between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. each Friday in the Crittenden Circuit Clerk’s office. In the event of inclement weather, please call (270) 965-4200 before showing up to courthouse.

Former longtime deputy PVA in Crittenden County, Evelyn Woodall Corley, 93, of Marion died Tuesday. Myers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Highway crews prepping for winter event

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is preparing for a winter weather event that is expected to include freezing rain starting Friday afternoon with possible impacts on traffic into Saturday morning.

Due to rain in the forecast before temperatures drop below freezing, crews in Kentucky’s 12 westernmost counties will be unable to pre-treat for this event.

Based on the latest forecast update, a winter mix that is likely to include freezing rain is expected to move across the region starting around 4 p.m., Friday, continuing until the early morning hours on Saturday.  Ice accumulations are expected to be enough to impact travel during the overnight hours and into the early morning on Saturday.

Motorsts who plan to be on the road overnight Friday and into Saturday morning, or have travel plans to neighboring states, should be aware that freezing rain is expected and that ice accumulations are likely create hazardous driving conditions.

Flooding could shut ferry as early as mid-week

Users of the Cave In Rock Ferry will want to monitor our news reports at The Press Online for potential closure of the service as early as Wednesday, Feb. 13 due to flooding.

National Weather Service hydrological prediction for the Ohio River at Shawneetown, Ill., puts the river above operational limits of the ferry as early as noon Wednesday. That forecast could be additionally affected by local rains or flow from upriver.

Service could be halted for several days, according to the forecast.

According to the ferry operator, the service generally closes when the river gauge is at 42.5 feet at Shawneetown. At that level, Ky. 91 North leading to the ferry landing in Crittenden County becomes impassable.

De-Iced: Ferry operating normal now

Although Cave In Rock Ferry closed early Friday due to ice in the Ohio River, the warmer temperatures cleared those issues up over the weekend.

The ferry is operating on a normal schedule, but fog on Monday was pretty heavy as illustrated in this photograph sent to us by Hutch Goad of Marion.

Roads slick in some areas this morning

Here's an update on road conditions in the county.

Since the live road report this morning, we have spoken with local officials who say there were indeed a couple of accidents this morning where motorists slid off of slick roads.

The highway around the rock quarry on US 60 East was still slick an hour or so ago and there was a bad spot on US 60 West near Airport Road. Also, Ky. 120 was reportedly slick earlier this morning all the way to the county line where there was a minor accident.

Be careful and don't assume the roads are perfectly clear. There could still be slick spots this morning.

Crittenden County Schools are closed this morning. Livingston is going, but on a one-hour delay.

Here is this morning's Live Winter Road Report

No school again today

Due to overnight sleeting that created slick road conditions, school officials have called off classes again today.

In Livingston, schools will open one hour late.
