EMS responding to U.S. 60 accident

Crittenden County EMS, Crittenden County Rescue and law enforcement are on the scene of an automobile accident on U.S. 60 East near J.P. Howerton Rd.

Multiple patients are involved, including one possible entrapment. Two Air Evac helicopters have been requested, one to the scene and one to the helipad at Crittenden Community Hospital.

U.S. 60 is closed and motorists should avoid this area.

Auto theft overnight in Marion

Marion Police Department is investigating an automobile theft and other mischief that occurred overnight Thursday and early Friday morning.

A car was stolen from a residence on Maxwell Street and crashed into a dumpster at Marion-Crittenden County Park. The suspect or suspects left the damaged vehicle and fled.

Police Chief Ray O'Neal said the incident happened sometime between midnight at 5 a.m.

There were four other incidents overnight where vehicles were rummaged through. Police believe all of the cases are connected. They occurred on East Bellville, East Depot, Old Shady Grove Road and Clark Street. 

Police may have a suspect. They are looking for an unnamed male subject who could have been involved.


641 Connect meeting in Fredonia July 11

The Kentucky Department of Transportation will host a public meeting for Lyon and Caldwell county residents July 11 to present final plans for the reconstruction 
of U.S. 641 at Fredonia to U.S. 62 at Eddyville.

The meeting will be an open house format, allowing attendees to view exhibits and talk to representatives about the project.

Written comments also will be accepted by Aug. 15 to Kyle Post, P.E., KYTC District 1 Office, 5501 Kentucky Dam Rd., Paducah, KY 42003.

All oral and written comments will be part of the official meeting record and later compiled.

The meeting is planned or 5 p.m., at the Fredonia Cumberland Presbyterian Church Activities Building.

Legion baseball coming to M-CC Park


Marion-Crittenden County Park will host American Legion Baseball tonight at 6pm. Madisonville Post 6 vs Ft Campbell Post 233.

There will be two more Legion games at the park in the coming days. Harrisburg, Ill., will play Madisonville at 5 p.m., Sunday, July 2 and Evansville will play Madisonville at 6 p.m., Sunday, July 9.

The Madisonville team is coached by former CCHS Rocket baseball player Adam Driver.

Fohs Hall available for rentals

Nominations sought for local Ag Hall of Fame

Nominations for the 2023 Crittenden County Agriculture Rural Leadership Hall of Fame are now being sought. 

The purpose of the local Agriculture Leadership Hall of Fame is to recognize contributions made to agriculture and community leadership. Awards will honor those who have made outstanding contributions to Crittenden County Agriculture. 

Nomination forms are available at the Crittenden County Extension office. Nomination deadline is July 5. 

Honorees will be announced during the Crittenden County Lions Club Fair Breakfast on Friday, Aug. 4. For more information, contact Dee Brasher Heimgartner, agriculture and natural resources education agent, at 270-965-5236.

Heady estate sale Thursday-Friday

An estate sale will be held Thursday and Friday on State Route 1668 in Marion.

Furniture, household appliances and farm equipment are some of the highlights of the estate sale of the late Billy Joe Heady.

Some of the farm equipment to be sold includes a 6-foot bush hog, disk, grinders and seeders, farm gates and a 12-foot trailer.

Lots of miscellaneous items will be included in this estate sale.







Chamber Leadership Breakfast tomorrow

Local leaders will participate in roundtable discussions during a Chamber of Commerce Leadership Breakfast Wednesday, June 28. The session will serve both to brainstorm on ways the Chamber can assist the business and the community. 

Chamber president Shanna West said she has participated in similar small group discussions, which she believes have proven helpful for guiding or revamping business models. She believes working in small groups to discuss ideas can be enlightening and will give chamber directors a sense of the actions the group can use to enhance local retail. 

The leadership breakfast will begin at 7 a.m., at Rocket Arena Conference Room.

KY 120 Bridge lowered to 5-ton limit

Here is an important transportation notice in case you missed this in last week's full-edition of the newspaper. 

A 5-ton load limit has been placed on the overflow bridge on KY 120 across the Tradewater River at the Crittenden-Webster County Line. 

The load rating was ordered reduced after an inspector found significant deterioration of the bridge substructure. The bridge is one of two bridges that cross a slough immediately west of the main Tradewater River bridge between Marion and Providence. 

A project to replace the bridge is expected to start sometime this fall. At that point, the highway will be closed for months.

This fundraising event will benefit the girls' basketball team.

Swim clinic next month in Marion

A swim clinic at Marion Golf and Pool will teach basic strokes and water safety July 11-12.

The beginner swim clinic will be held from 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m., at a cost of $30 per individuals.

The clinic will be designed for ages 5-up. Space is limited so early registration is encouraged.

Youth Football Camp Starts Monday


The annual Rocket Youth Football Camp will be held on the CCHS campus from 9 a.m., until 11:30 a.m., Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Lunch will be provided at the school at 11:30.

Cost is $30. There is a $10 discount for more than one sibling. 

The camp is for ages 5-15 and will include all areas of football instruction by Crittenden County High School staff, players and former players. Flag football games will be conducted at the end of each day's workout. Each camper will receive a T-shirt.

Registration will begin at 8:30 am on the first day of camp.

Marion has installed a pump and long hose to draw water from Lake George as dry weather sets in across the community. 

Marion remains under a Water Conservation Order due to its year-long water crisis.

Diabetes class Tuesday in Salem

Livingston Hospital will present a diabetes education program at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 20. 

Staff from the Livingston Care Clinic will present information to help individuals with diabetes manage the disease and discuss medications used to treat diabetes. There also will be a question and answer session.

The class will be held at the Livingston Hospital Business Annex, located at 111 East Main St., Salem.

Buntin consignment auction Saturday

Buntin Auction Service will sell farm equipment, hunting equipment, boats, tools and miscellaneous household items Saturday, June 17 during a consignment auction.

The sale will be held at Buntin Auction Service on KY 297 about 7 miles from Marion.

Some of the equipment to be sold includes riding mowers, industrial fans, fuel tanks, tires, tractors and other farm machinery.

For the outdoorsman, Buntin Auction Service will have a boat, deer stands and feeders and miscellaneous camping supplies.

Auction begins at 9 a.m.

High-speed pursuit in northern Crittenden County

A high-speed pursuit twice spilled over into Crittenden County Tuesday afternoon after it had begun in Union County. 

Crittenden County Sheriff Evan Head, state police and authorities from Union County were chasing a black pickup truck about 1:40 p.m. Head's cruiser was at one point struck by the fleeing truck while the two met on Belles Mines Road.

The chase began in Union County following the report of a domestic violence case. The driver of the pickup sped away from police. The suspect was allegedly armed with two knives. 

After colliding with Head's cruiser, the black truck left northern Crittenden County and went back into Union County, traveling to near the Henderson County line before coming back south and eventually crashing on its second trip to Crittenden County. The crash that ended the hour-long pursuit was near the intersection of KY 365 and Chandler Farm Road.

The suspect, Clinton Snyder, was taken into custody and will be facing felony charges in Crittenden County as well as charges in Union County. 



College players headline next week's softball camp

Three local collegiate softball players will headline a youth softball camp next week at Marion-Crittenden County Park. 

Ashlyn Hicks, Lake Land College; Chandler Moss, Shawnee College; and Hadlee Rich, Southeast Illinois, will be on hand during the camp to offer expert advise to young players age 9-13.

The camp is being hosted next Wednesday and Thursday by the Lady Rocket softball team. All proceeds benefit the high school softball program.

Players should come to camp dressed in game attire. 



Livingston Helping Hands yard sale

Livingston County Helping Hands annual will be conducting its annual fundraising yard sale June 15-17 in Smithland. 

Proceeds from the sale will go toward the Helping Hands Christmas baskets program later this year and to buy meat and canned goods to provide a Christmas dinner for over 250 families during the holidays. 

The sale will be at 509 Mill Street near the Smithland Dollar General. Thursday and Friday’s sales will be 8 a.m., to 4 p.m., and on Saturday it will be 8 a.m., until noon.

Housing Development going up near park

In case you missed the last few editions of The Crittenden Press newspaper, there's been some big stories you need to get caught up on.

For starters, there will be a multi-million-dollar housing complex going up near the park and fairgrounds. All of the details were in a recent article in the newspaper. 

Also, there's some breakthroughs with regard to the dam at Lake George. Experts may now know why the levee starting weeping so badly last spring, prompting a controlled breach of the earthen dam. Find out what's next by regularly reading the full edition of our newspaper.

VBS starts Monday at Mexico Baptist

Follow the twists and turns to VBS at Mexico Baptist Church.

Classes for kids ages 3 through sixth grade begin Monday.

The theme is Twists & Turns: Following Jesus Changes the Game.

VBS will be held from 9 a.m.-noon at the church located on Mexico Road, about a mile from the intersection of Mott City Road and KY 70.

Hurricane Camp Meeting is next week

The 135th Hurricane Camp Meeting begins Monday.

The non-denominational church revival is held on the grounds of Hurricane Church near Tolu.

The evening church services have drawn hundreds of thousands of people during its history. See this week's Crittenden Press for some history of the event's early years.

Lyon County exit ramp closed for weekend

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans to close a ramp in the Interstate 24/Interstate 69 Exit 42 Interchange in Lyon County starting at 6 p.m., on Friday, June 9.

The Exit 42 ramp from I-24 eastbound to I-69 northbound will be closed through the weekend for erosion control work, guardrail upgrades, shoulder improvements, and paving.

The ramp will close promptly at 6 p.m.,Friday. It is expected to reopen around noon on Monday, June 12.

Library's summer reading program starts Thursday

The Crittenden County Public LIbrary's summer reading program gets into full swing Thursday.

Each Thursday in June, there are children's activities planned at 10 a.m. In July, teen programs will be offered at 2 p.m.

Camp Kindness is the theme for this summer's program. 
Children and teens can keep reading logs and win prizes at the end of the summer.

Magic show kicks off library summer

The annual Summer Reading Program at Crittenden County Public Library kicks off Tuesday, June 6 with a free magic show at Fohs Hall. 

Celebrity Illusionist Reed Masterson will entertain the crowd beginning at 3 p.m.

Stop by the library to register for the Summer Reading Program. Special programs will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays in June for kids and Tuesdays and Thursdays in July for teens.

Reading prizes will be provided at the end of the summer.

911 dispatching: Attention livestock owners

Marion-Crittenden County 911 has issued a request, asking livestock owners to provide their name and contact information.

Dispatchers are getting a number of calls when livestock get loose and end up on local roads or on private lawns. Dispatching maintains a list of contact information for individuals who own livestock, but it’s incomplete. If you’re a livestock owner, send your name and two phone numbers via email to kdalton@marionky.gov.

Museum houses county history collections

The Crittenden County Historical Museum is open Wednesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Located at 124 E. Bellville St., in Marion, it is the oldest church building in town, butyl in 1881.

Learn about the history of the church and view interesting collections of Crittenden County artifacts and memorabilia.

The museum has an extensive collection of Marion and Crittenden County school memorabilia, including pictures of the one-room schools that once dotted the countryside. Visitors can also see hundreds of photos and other memorabilia in the Marion High School Memory Room. 
 
The museum also houses several cases of military uniforms from many conflicts.

Local officers, federal agents arrest 2 in Marion


Local law enforcement with assistance from federal agents and nearby sheriffs' departments seized more than 18 grams of methamphetamine and arrested two individuals at a home on Keeling Street last night in Marion.

An alleged armed robbery reported in Lyon County led to a search warrant at the Keeling Street address where William "TJ" Mayers of Marion and Joseph Workman of Salem were taken into custody on drug charges. Mayers was also charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

Crittenden County Sheriff Evan Head said sheriffs' departments from Lyon and Livingston counties and agents with the West Kentucky Violent Crimes Task Force and the ATF were involved in the arrest.

City reinstates water conservation order

Knox Chiropractic opens in Salem

Dr. Robert "Bobby" Knox has opened a chiropractic office in Salem.

The Marion native and Crittenden County High School graduate recently returned to the area and has established the practice on Main Street in Salem.

Appointments are available Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday 9-11:30 a.m.

Free smoke detectors and fish at Mattoon

 Free smoke detectors will be available at the Mattoon Volunteer Fire Department’s annual fundraising fish fry from 4 to 8 p.m., on Saturday, June 10.

The meal will include fish, hushpuppies, beans, slaw, potato salad, dessert and a drink. There will be a 50/50 raffle and fellowship available at the event. Cost is $10 for adults and $4 for children age 6-12. Younger ones are free. Proceeds benefit the local fire department.
