Gov. Andy Beshear announced today that all Kentuckians 16 and older will be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine beginning April 5. Only the Pfizer vaccine is approved for 16 and 17-year-olds.

We want to get ahead of the more aggressive COVID-19 variants and make sure that we fill every available appointment. Make a plan to get your shot of hope.”

City leaders find option in sewer dilemma

Facing a dilemma with its plan to build a new sewer plant, the City of Marion established a rate hike Monday night for its Environmental Fee that's charged on water and sewer bills.

The increase will be about half of what had originally been proposed earlier this month after state authorities told Marion it needs a greater revenue steam to secure a government-backed low-interest loan to fix sewer problems. The Division of Water is mandating that the city resolve the sewer situation by building a new plant, which will cost more than $13 million.

The environmental fee will go up about $14 for the average water and sewer customer starting July 1, and could rise again in July 2022 if further funding is not secured from additional sources.

In next week's newspaper, The Crittenden Press will have all the details of Monday's council meeting with insight into where more dollars might be found and what council members are saying about the situation. We will also have a chart showing the precise fee you will pay based upon usage.

Courtney named Rockets' head football coach

Crittenden County School District has announced that Gaige Courtney has been promoted to head football coach of the Rockets.

Courtney, 30, accepted the position after meeting Wednesday afternoon with Supt. Vince Clark.

A 2009 graduate of Crittenden County High School, Courtney played on the Rockets 2008 football team that advanced to the Class A state semifinals before losing to Beechwood. He went on to play collegiately at Kentucky State University, graduating in 2013 and staying on the staff as a graduate assistant for more than a year.

From there, Courtney spent a two-year assistant coaching stint at Webster County before returning to Crittenden County in 2017 as linebackers coach. He was promoted to defensive coordinator the following season and has led a unit ranked among the state’s best the past three seasons.

“I feel blessed and excited,” Courtney said. “There’s a whole lot of work to do and it’s time to get going.”

Courtney becomes just the second CCHS graduate to become head coach of the Rocket football team.

Supt. Clark said Courtney’s hiring signals what will be a seamless transition after the recent resignation of former head coach Sean Thompson, who will be going to Paducah Tilghman.

“I am very happy to have someone lead this program that has been part of it and connected to it and who cares about the players and this community,” Clark said. “He understands the culture here, and Gaige will continue the momentum that has been established in our football program.”

Schools resort of virtual learning only on Friday

Crittenden County School District announced that it will forgo in-person learning for all Crittenden County High School students on Friday.

This is due to recent positive COVID-19 cases at the high school.

All high school students will engage in remote learning to allow for enhanced sanitizing and deep cleaning procedures

"Please note that this change is only for Crittenden County High School students. All elementary and middle school students will continue with their regular in-person and virtual learning plans. Thank you for your flexibility as we continue to put our students' and staff members' safety first," the district said in a statement released at noon today.

No in-person high school Friday

Due to recent positive COVID-19 cases at Crittenden County High School, all high school students will engage in remote learning on Friday, March 19.

Lady Rocket withdraw from postseason play

Due to COVID-19 protocol, Crittenden County’s girls basketball team has withdrawn from postseason play.

Coach Shannon Hodge made the announcement just before noon today. No further details will be made public due to privacy issues.

The tournament was abruptly postponed for three days earlier this week as school officials and coaches from across the Fifth District scrambled to find a way that the tournament could proceed with Crittenden County in the lineup when it became apparent that COVID issues had emerged. As it turned out, those attempts were not enough to overcome consequences of the pandemic.

“We are grateful for them giving us an opportunity to try to play,” Hodge said. “The coaches in our district are all good friends and I have a great deal of respect for them.”

The Lady Rocket basketball season, one of the best in school history, is finished with the girls boasting a 16-4 record and having played in the All A Classic State Tournament final four.

“Nothing can happen that will take away or tarnish what this team has accomplished,” Hodge said. “We have had a wonderful year, having won the All A regional championship, playing in the state semifinal, sweeping the district during regular season, getting the No. 1 seed for the tournament and being the No. 2 ranked team in the region (RPI) heading into postseason. None of that can be taken away by the pandemic.”

The Fifth District Girls’ Basketball Tournament will begin Friday night at Cadiz. I was supposed to have started Tuesday of this week. Livingston Central, which was slated to play the Lady Rockets, will get a first-round bye. Trigg County and Lyon County will play in the opening round with the winner facing Livingston Central in Saturday night’s championship.

Crittenden County's boys' basketball team is playing in tonight's district championship game at Cadiz. They will take on Lyon County in the title game for the fourth straight year. Tipoff is 7pm. Tickets are sold out.

Main Street donates last dollar to museum

Marion Main Street, Inc., which dissolved last year, completed distribution of the last of its assets to the Crittenden County Historical Museum last week.

Former Main Street director Susan Alexander said the group donated its last $150 in cash to the museum in honor of the late Emily Shelby, who died in October. Shelby was a Main Street director for about a dozen years and chaired the group’s board of directors for nearly 10 years.

Alexander said that the memorial was made as part of Women in History Month. She said Shelby was instrumental in having the community’s 25-page history coloring book published a few years ago.

“She was a preservationist,” Alexander said of Shelby.

Main Street also funded a series of YouTube videos last summer. Those were also done in memory of Shelby’s contributions to the community.

The museum will open for the season on April 7.

Backwater subsides, county roads emerge

There might be a whole lot more water falling in the form of rain today, but the backwater from area rivers and streams is subsiding.

The county's long list of road closings is now much shorter. As of this morning, only Providence Road, Enon Church Road and Cool Springs Road remained under water.

Just a few days ago, that list included more than one dozen roads.

Local leaders face big sewer dilemma

Marion's sewer plant off Adams Street.
It really stinks, and everyone on the Marion City Council agrees that the dilemma they face over the sewer system is a complicated mess.

The Crittenden Press was at Monday night's council meeting and this week's full edition of the newspaper has a detailed article about how much more money local residents will have to pay on their water and sewer bills to assure Marion remains in compliance with Division of Water mandates.

There are no easy answers, and it's unclear which path will be taken.

A handful of new COVID cases here

A handful of new COVID-19 cases, including a backlog of a few diagnoses, were announced this morning by public health officials.

Crittenden County had four new cases reported yesterday, including three teens. There were four more over the previous four days, bringing the county’s seven-day total to nine cases between March 10-16. That will continue to keep the county in the so-called Orange Zone on the state’s color-coded COVID map.

The health department in Marion has vaccine available. Call 270-965-5215 to schedule your appoint for Thursday.

Crittenden County Judge-Executive Perry Newcom said the trend in cases is reassuring that perhaps the vaccine is working.

"Good news is that we aren’t seeing our senior members with positives as most have now been given their complete first and second doses of vaccine, which I am hoping... is an indication of the effectiveness of the vaccine," Newcom said.

Tough decisions await Marion City Council

Will an environmental fee your already pay water and sewer bills be going up again?

Marion City Council will meet in regular, monthly session tonight at 5pm at city hall to discuss a number of pressing issues, including its plan to build a multi-million-dollar sewer treatment plant.

The city began preparing to pay for the new plant more than five years ago and created an environmental fee that was tacked onto sewer bills in 2016. That fee went up in 2019 as it became apparent that more money would be needed. And now, with bids indicating a greater-than-expected-cost to build the proposed sewer plant, council members will have to decided whether to increase the environmental fee again, perhaps even doubling it.

Selecting a contractor for the sewer plant project is also on tonight's agenda.

More information is available here, on the city's public website.

Thompson is leaving Rocket football

Rocket football Coach Sean Thompson met with his team today on campus and told players that he is resigning in order to accept another head coaching position.

It’s expected that later today, Paducah Tilghman will  name him its head football coach for the 2021 season.

Thompson, the first Crittenden County graduate to become head football coach at his alma mater, has guided his teams to three straight district championships and three berths in the state quarterfinals while posting a record of 28-8 in three seasons.

His team was 7-3 last year, losing to eventual Class A state runner-up Kentucky Country Day in the playoffs.

A 2004 graduate of Crittenden County High School where he played quarterback, Thompson played as a receiver in college at Campbellsville University.

The Tilghman coaching position has been open since January when Jonathan Smith resigned after posting a 22-11 record over three seasons and taking the Blue Tornado to the state quarterfinals in 2019.

Thompson first joined the Rocket football coaching staff in 2009 then left to spend a few years at Union County with then-Braves head coach Steve Carter (a former Rocket assistant who is now Superintendent of Schools at McCracken County). Thompson returned to CCHS to serve as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach before being named the new skipper, replacing 27-year head coach Al Starnes in January of 2018.
