Championship Banner Project Underway at CCHS

Crittenden County High School is on a mission to create some championship banners to hang in Rocket Arena.

With the encouragement from Superintendent Vince Clark, the CCHS athletic department and student council have undertaken the project to hang banners in the gym, recognizing district, regional and state champions in athletics. (See current listing below).

Crittenden County Athletics Director Sean Thompson said a rendering of the banners has been completed and much of the research has been done. He credited school librarian and student council sponsor Jennifer Bell with helping ramrod the project. Additionally, The Crittenden Press and local sports historian Andy Hunt have been instrumental in providing information for the undertaking.

Thompson said the original plan was to have the banners hung by graduation this spring. However, some setbacks may postpone their unveiling until the next school year.

While mainline sports are among those that will be recognized, there is an effort to find records for cheerleading, band and perhaps other activities.

Anyone with additional information that would benefit this project is encouraged to contact Thompson or Bell at the high school.

Minor injuries in bus crash at Rosebud

A bus crash in the Rosebud area of Crittenden County on U.S. 60 East at about 3 p.m. has resulted in a couple of very minor injuries.

A westbound Miller Transportation passenger bus making its way from Evansville, Ind., to Paducah slipped off the roadway entering a curve and traveled about 100 yards across a ditch and through the front yard of Ronnie Watson's home just east of Rosebud Church. Passengers said the bus rocked back and forth several times before coming to a rest across the driveway of the home. The bus became stuck in the mud and was forced to wait a couple of hours before a tow truck could get the vehicle back on the roadway to complete its regular run.

Crittenden EMS responded, seeing a handful of patients and clearing them all. Once was outfitted with a cervical collar for precautionary reasons.

The bus was carrying 12 passengers, most of whom were headed home to the Paducah area from various locations.

Traffic was reduced to one lane, but the highway was never closed.

Kenergy Corp. customers in Crittenden County and blocked the highway to through traffic.
UPDATE: Power has been restored to the affected areas and the roadway is open. The driver was identified as Jamison Shaffer of Cave In Rock, Ill. According to Deputy Agent, he was treated and released from Crittenden Community Hospital in Marion and subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

ORIGINAL POST: Ky. 91 North just outside of Marion will be blocked and a good portion of northwest Crittenden County without power for a couple of hours while a Kenergy Corp. crew replaces a utility pole taken down by a wreck.

According to Crittenden County Sheriff's Deputy Ray Agent, a white Chevy Z71 pickup traveling north on the highway dropped off the right shoulder of the road and overcorrected, which sent the vehicle rolling off the lefthand side of the roadway, clipping an overhead feeder pole and dropping the power line across the roadway. Fire destroys Marion home

A Marion couple and their children safely escaped a burning home early this morning on Blackburn Street near Marion Country Club.

Firefighters from Marion City Fire Department and Crittenden County Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene at about 3am and were still there this morning putting out hot spots.

Marion Fire Chief Red Howton said the fire appears to have started somewhere the near the garage area of the home.

Crittenden County Assistant Fire Chief Dylan Crabtree was among the first to respond. He said everyone was out of the home by the time he arrived. The occupants had gone across the street to call for help.

Crabtree said that when he entered the burning home, fire was in the attic and the ceiling collapsed so firemen had to fight the blaze from outside. Crabtree said the home and belongings were a complete loss.

The Red Cross met with the family this morning to see how it could help. According to posts on social media, Beth Hodge is the homeowner.

City, county close offices for Good Friday

Some local offices and services, including The Crittenden Press, will be closed Friday in observance of Good Friday.

Public offices closed in Crittenden County include Marion City Hall, all courthouse offices and county services such as the animal shelter and convenience center, and the senior citizens center. Marion Convenience Center, Crittenden County Animal Shelter and Crittenden County Sheriff's Office will also be closed Saturday.
Because the courthouse is closed, there will be no driver's testing administered Friday.

The public library and Extension service will be open on Good Friday.

Meantime, Good Friday will be observed as a half-day off for state offices. It is not observed by federal offices, so post offices will be open and the mail will run.

Emergency closure on Ky. 1668

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KyTC) advises motorists Ky. 1668/Crittenden Springs Road will be closed between milepoint 1.89 and 2.8 in Crittenden County starting at noon today and extending through Monday.

A contractor for KyTC is resurfacing Ky. 1668 and in the process discovered road base failures. The near mile-long closure is necessary to allow the contractor to repair the road base failures with the goal of reopening the route Monday.

Motorists are advised to travel around the closure via westbound U.S. 60 to northbound Ky. 297 to northbound Ky. 2123. Drivers should expect delays and avoid the area if possible. When traveling around the closure, motorists should slow down and use extra caution.

All work is subject to change depending on weather, emergencies and other factors beyond the control of the Department of Highways.

Visit goky.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Traffic information for the District 1 counties is also available at facebook.com/KYTCDistrict1 and twitter.com/KYTCDistrict1.

Pursuant to Executive Order 11988 and 44 CFR Part 9.12, final notice is hereby given of FEMA’s intent to provide funding for this project under the Public Assistance (PA) Program.
An initial disaster‐wide Public Notice was published Thursday, April 26, 2018 for DR-4358 Severe Storms, Flooding, Landslides, and Mudslides, Comments and other information received were fully evaluated by FEMA along with evaluation of social, economic, environmental, and safety considerations. Turkey season opens Saturday

The forests and fields of Crittenden County will be filled with more than gobbling spring turkeys this weekend.

There will be lots of shotgunners afield starting Saturday morning when the annual hunting season opens for tom turkeys.

Last year, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources biologists took samples from 30 turkeys harvested in Crittenden and Livingston counties. They were looking for any reason that might explain the recent downturn in harvest figures in the two counties and lower observation reports from hunters.

To date, there has been no official report released from that study. However, last fall preliminary information from the study indicated that nothing conclusive had been found, but more testing was yet to be done.

Local hunters have reported mixed reviews on the number of turkey sightings during pre-season scouting.

Free community techonology classes offered

Free community technology classes will be offered later this month through Crittenden County High School's Civic Responsibility Engagement Week, or CREW. The classes will be held April 22-26 at the high school.

An interest survey to gauge the community's interest in particular classes is available online at https://bit.ly/2D6TRMR. Classes to selection from include Microsoft Word basics, Microsoft Excel basics, Google Docs, Google Sheets, basic photo editing, archive pictures, create your own resume and cover letter, basic keyboarding and basic photography. Other classes may also be suggested.

A specific schedule of classes will be released on our district page. Email teacher Amy Hardin at Amy.Hardin@crittenden.kyschools.us or call the school at (270) 965-2248 to register.

CREW is a way to enrich the lives of high school seniors through various acts of civic engagement. The idea was born late last summer by CCHS Principal Mandy Irvan to allow teens to give back to the community.

"We’ve got kids doing a lot of different things," Irvan said at a recent board of education meeting.

There will be more than a dozen "CREWs" engaged in various activities throughout the county during the last full week of the month.
