Winter storm watch upgraded to warning

A winter storm warning remains in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday for western Kentucky and the surrounding region.

A light freezing rain will overspread the western parts of the region late tonight and early Sunday morning.

Precipitation in the form of rain is not expected in Crittenden County until the early morning hours of Sunday. The rain will transition over to freezing rain after daybreak Sunday and turn to a mixture of freezing rain and sleet around noon. That will continue until shortly before nightfall when sleet is expected to take over until around noon Sunday. At that time, sleet will mix with snow. Snow will take over around 2 a.m. Monday and continue until shortly before noon when precipitation is expected to cease.

Heavy accumulations of ice, sleet and snow are expected. Snow and sleet accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected to fall on top of a quarter- to a half-inch of ice in areas along and north of the Ohio Rver. Oce accumulations over a half-inch are possible south of the Ohio River, which includes Crittenden County. Some thunder will also be possible, which could lead to some isolated higher accumulations.

Fravel conditions will become progressively more treacherous through the day Sunday and especially Sunday night. RTree damage and power outages will be possible.

Crittenden County Courthouse will be open as a warming shelter to those who may lose power during the storm.
