Lyon crash among five motorcycle wrecks


Preliminary statistics indicate that 11 people have died in 11 separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, June 18, through Sunday, June 24, 2012.

Nine of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and five victims were not wearing seat belts.

Single-fatality crashes occurred in Caldwell, Madison, McCracken (2), Taylor, Trimble and Whitley counties.   

One double-fatality motor vehicle crash occurred in Oldham County and the victims were teenagers.

There were five motorcycle involved fatalities that occurred in Edmonson, Jefferson, Lyon, Nelson and Scott counties.  

There were two pedestrian involved fatalities that occurred in Boone and Pike counties.

Through June 24, preliminary statistics indicate that 353 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2012. This is 46 more fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2011. There have been 287 motor vehicle fatalities and 163 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirty-six crashes involved a motorcycle and 19 victims were not wearing helmets. Three crashes involved an ATV and two victims were not wearing helmets. Fifty-eight deaths have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. 

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
