Accident on U.S. 60 sends 2 to hospital

Two people were taken to the hospital this morning following a three-vehicle accident in Mattoon that also involved a pedestrian.

It appeared that a motorist driving an SUV side-swiped an empty log truck, then hit a state-owned pickup parked on the side of the highway. The state vehicle was there because inmates were nearby clearing brush from a guardrail.

A deputy jailer working for the Crittenden County Detention Center was standing on the side of the highway and was injured. That man and a woman driving the SUV were both taken to the hospital. It did not appear either had life-threatening injuries, but both were put onto stretchers and taken by ambulance to Crittenden Hospital.
