The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to restrict traffic to one lane on the US 60 Cumberland River Bridge at Smithland starting Monday, May 17. The lane restriction will include an 11 ft. maximum load width.
The daytime lane restriction is to allow a detailed inspection of the bridge structure at US 60 Livingston County mile point 12.348.
Inspectors plan to be on the bridge from approximately 8 a.m., to approximately 5 p.m., each day. The detailed inspection will require the use of a Snooper truck on the bridge deck which will restrict traffic to a maximum 11 foot load width.
Motorists should be alert for slowing and stopped traffic as they approach the bridge. Traffic flow will be controlled by flaggers and some minor delays are possible during the movement and positioning of equipment as inspectors go about their work.
Motorists should use appropriate caution in the work zone where equipment, flaggers and inspection personnel will be on the bridge deck in close proximity to traffic flow.
The inspection on the US 60 Cumberland River Bridge is expected to take about a week, weather permitting. However, there will be no lane or width restriction on Election Day, Tuesday, May 18.
Also known as the Lucy Jefferson Lewis Memorial Bridge and the Smithland Bridge, the structure carries approximately 5,000 vehicles across the Cumberland River in an average day. The US 60 Cumberland River Bridge opened to traffic in 1931.
