Kentucky’s Nov. 8 General Election is now less than a month away. If you are not registered, Tuesday is the deadline at 4 p.m. It can be done in person at the courthouse inside the county clerk’s office or online at GoVoteKy.com.
The excused absentee ballot online portal is now open, to have an absentee ballot mailed. Deadline to request a ballot is Oct. 25 and completed ballots must be in the hands of the county clerk by 6 p.m., local time, on Nov. 8.
Marion City Council will meet in special session at 5pm Tuesday at city hall for an update on the water crisis.
The National Weather Service in Paducah says this is the driest summer and fall in more than 65 years.
October 9th – 15th is Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association Week. The Homemaker Association’s primary objective is to teach educational programs that can provide a better and more meaningful life for themselves and their families.
There a five clubs currently in Crittenden County: After Hours, Challengers, Cooking Club, Hooks and Needles and the Quilt Club.
You can also become a Member at Large if you can’t attend meetings and receive a monthly newsletter. Each month After Hours and Challengers have many educational topics. Some topics this year include: Stress Eating, Fun with Fermented Foods and Cook Wild Kentucky.
Each year the Homemakers award a senior with a $500 scholarship which they raise money for during the year. Being a Homemaker is a great way to serve, lead and help those in the community. If you are interested in being a Homemaker please contact the Extension Office at 270-965-5236.
Madisonville was 9-8-1 this season and were the Seventh District champion.
The Maroons are ranked right below Crittenden in the KHSAA RPI rankings. The Lady Rockets are 5th in the region in RPI with a record of 11-5-2. Crittenden was the Fifth District runner-up.
“Depending on the creation, they usually take about 30 minutes each,” said Sonya Williams, who is the county clerk in Livignston. “The McGrew family (our neighbors) work hard during multiple seasons cutting, raking, baling and storing the bales. The Williamses retrieve, create and build the displays. It’s a complete team effort. When our sons were toddlers, my husband (Michael) painted a Jack O’ Lantern that they adored. The next year, they begged for another, which was the birth of the spider bale. Year after year, while they were young, they came to expect it around Halloween.”
Now, their creations are not only placed all around Livingston County for the public to view, but the project has morphed into a drive where canned goods and money can be donated. They also
Crittenden County Rescue Squad has mailed out reminders of its annual fundraising drive. The squad has announced that due to lasting pandemic issues, it will not be having the customary portrait shoot in conjunction with the fundraiser.
The rescue squad is asking for a donation of $25 or more. The squad sent about 4,200 letters to residents and supporters. It says that 100 percent of the donations received goes to better outfit the squad with lifesaving equipment and training.
The rescue squad responds to automobile accidents and other emergencies, searches and rescues. It operates solely on government and community support and does not charge for its service. Fire dues that are paid as part of county tax bills do not benefit the rescue squad.

Marion will be getting just over $1 million in the form of infrastructure grant from the Delta Regional Authority.
The project, which included replacement of sewer lines a couple of years ago, will have a total cost of about $19 million.
It will be a few more months before the sewer treatment plant construction is finished.

Foster shot 5-over 77 in the first round of play Tuesday with tough pin placement at the Bowling Green Country Club. The lowest score Tuesday was a five-under 67.
Before this year’s sub-state round was implemented, golfers needed to shoot well on the first day of state competition to make it to the second round.
Because of the new format, all 89 golfers played rounds on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
Coach Vicki Hatfield said flags were in tough spots, tucked on the edge of greens behind sand traps, which made the greens quite tricky.
Foster ended Tuesday's first round tied for 28th, hitting seven greens in regulation and double bogeying the last hole after hitting into some trees.
Hatfield commends the new format for a smaller state tournament. In the past, 144 golfers slowed play.
“I’m so proud of him, I thought played really well,” Hatfield said. “We tried to play conservative, because the pins were in sucker spots.”
Foster missed qualifying for state in 2021 by one stroke. His goal Wednesday was to finish in the top 15.

The girls beat Lyon County 6-1 at Cadiz Monday night to advance to the Fifth District Championship.
CCHS will face Trigg County at 5:30pm in tonight's district title match at Cadiz.
Trigg is No. 1 in the region's RPI rankings and Crittenden is No. 5. The Lady Wildcats have beaten Crittenden twice this season and 15 straight times dating back to 2016.

The Lady Rockets are 10-4-2 and ranked No. 5 in the First Region, according to the KHSAA power rankings. Lyon County is 8-11-0 and ranked No. 9.
If the Lady Rockets can prevail tonight, they will play tournament host and the region’s top-ranked team in the district championship. Trigg County is 13-2-1 this season.
October 11 is the deadline to register if you wish to vote in the Nov. 8 General Election. First-time voters can register at the county clerk’s office or go online to govoteky.com to register, update or check on your registration. Just click on Review your Registration.
The online registration portal closes at 3 p.m., on Oct. 11.
Once your registration application is accepted, the county clerk will mail confirmation and notify you of your polling location.
You can also download a voter registration card from govoteky.com, fill it out and take it to your clerk’s office or mail it there, or to the State Board of Elections, 140 Walnut St., Frankfort, KY 40601.
In Kentucky, to be eligible to vote you must be a U.S. Citizen, be a current resident of Kentucky, be at least 18 years of age on or before Nov 8, not be a convicted felon (or have your voting rights restored following an expungement, executive pardon or executive order), have not been judged incompetent in a Kentucky court of law and do not claim the right to vote anywhere outside Kentucky.
Princeton Bowling Alley has announced that it will be closing for good on Oct. 1 unless a crowd-funding campaign takes off.
Northfield Family Bowling Center has operated in Princeton since the early 1990s, according to an article by WKMS public radio station. Current owners have run the business over the past decade. Financial losses during the pandemic and a slow summer has forced owners to close unless something big happens within the next few days.
Capitol Cinemas in Princeton closed two years ago due to similar financial struggles.
The bowling alley has launched an online GoFundMe campaign that owners told WKMS could help keep the business afloat. The goal is $50,000, but the bowling alley could benefit if even half of that amount is raised. In addition to open play, the bowling alley is home to leagues and area Special Olympics teams regularly play there.
A number of Crittenden Countians have for decades participated in leagues and open bowling in Princeton. The alley also established a Ronnie Myers Memorial bowling tournament to recognize the late bowling enthusiast from Marion.
The event will likely last three to four hours as candidates for public office have each been given an opportunity to participate.
Some candidates will also answer questions from an independent moderator, which will be Crittenden Press Editor Chris Evans.
There will be food available from mobile vendors that will set up outside of Fohs Hall.
There is no cost and the public is invited.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans a westbound work zone lane restriction on U.S. 60 (Clarks River Road) on Paducah's south side on Monday, Oct. 3.
Westbound traffic on Clarks River Road will be restricted to one-lane at McCracken County mile point 18.625 to allow erosion repairs at the Clarks River Bridge.
During cleaning and maintenance on the bridge this week, the KYTC District 1 bridge crew found a washout that threatened the roadway near the end of the westbound bridge structure. On Monday, the eroded area will be excavated and filled with concrete.
All westbound traffic will move to the left-hand or passing lane in this work zone starting around 8 a.m., Monday. The work is expected to be completed around noon on the same day.
Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and bridge maintenance personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.
