Madisonville man killed in Warrior mine accident

A 58-year-old coal miner was killed Tuesday at the Cardinal mine in Hopkins County. The mine is owned by Warrior Coal, a subsidiary of Alliance Resource Partners.

Phillip Ramsey, of Madisonville, a shuttle car operator, began his shift at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday. The 29-year mining veteran was out of his shuttle car working on ventilation curtains when he was struck by a coal scoop at approximately 8:30 p.m. He was taken to Baptist Health Hospital in Madisonville but was pronounced dead.

“This man’s death is especially tragic as this is the second miner that we have lost within a week,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “Please join me in expressing my deep condolences to his family, friends and community.”

All mining operations were shut down after the accident and will continue to be suspended while an investigation continues. The Kentucky Department for Natural Resources, Division of Mine Safety, sent investigators to the mine Tuesday evening.

“Our sympathy goes out to Mr. Ramsey’s family for his untimely loss,” Kentucky Energy and Environment Secretary Rebecca Goodman said. “The cabinet works daily to keep miners safe through training and inspections and when accidents like this happen, we look carefully at what happened and how it could have been prevented. We will work with the Cardinal mine to do just that.”

Crash between Fredonia and Eddyvile

There has been a traffic accident on U.S. 641 between Fredonia and Eddyville that is blocking traffic at this time.

Reports are that a couple of motorcycles and a passenger vehicle have crashed.

The wreck is near the intersection with Ky. 1943.

Both lanes were initially blocked and traffic issues were anticipated until about 12:30pm.

UPDATE with details of the crash

A couple of Marion men were involved in a motorcycle crash in Lyon County Wednesday, one was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to information from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department, Jon C. Shackleford, 62, and Billy R. Marvel, 58, were on motorcycles traveling south on U.S. 641 near the intersection of Ky. 1943 when the accident occurred.

The sheriff’s department said a pedestrian was on the side of a highway bridge crossing Skinframe Creek causing traffic in both lanes to adjust. Traffic in the southbound lane came to an abrupt stop and that’s when Shackleford’s motorcycle crashed into Marvel’s.

The accident happened at about 10:35 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 14 about 2.5 miles north of Eddyville.

About half of locally requested ballots already returned

With the portal to request an absentee ballot for the Nov. 3 election closed, 572 voters in Crittenden County requested a mail-in ballot. That is only 8.5% of the registered voters in the county. State officials anticipated as many as half of Kentucky's voters would request a mail-in absentee ballot.

As of this weekend, 309, or 54%, of the ballots requested have been returned.

Only 28 of the 572 requested ballots have not been sent out to the voter. Those were requested Thursday and Friday and will be mailed to voters Tuesday.

It’s now too late to request an absentee ballot in Kentucky, but early voting starts Tuesday at Crittenden County courthouse.

Early voting is available 8-4 weekdays through Nov. 2 in the county clerk’s office. Additionally, the county clerk's office will be open for voting only from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and 9-1 Saturdays. Both paperless and traditional paper balloting will be offered.

Masks are suggested but not required. However, voters will be asked to social distance.

As the courthouse offers limited space with court and regular business continuing, voters may be required to wait in line outside.

While anyone is welcomed to vote early, the clerk’s office suggests anyone with a mobility issue wait to vote Election Day at the Marion Ed-Tech Center, which has no steps to traverse and is fully handicap-accessible.

Tires scrap spilled onto Ky. 91 roadside

A tractor-trailer overturned on Ky. 91 North yesterday between Fredonia and Princeton, spilling a large payload of tire scraps into a field.

The single-vehicle accident happened about 9:19 a.m., near the 17 mile marker.

The rig's rear axle apparently locked up, causing the crash.

Caldwell County Deputy Coleman Dixon's accident report says Jimmy Maulding, 43, of Madisonville was operating the tractor-trailer for Brett Chappell Trucking out of Dawson Springs. Maulding was traveling southbound, approaching Skin Frame Road and as he was going around the curve the trailer came loose and dropped off the right side of the road in a ditch line, striking a mailbox and overturning onto the passenger side, coming to final rest on the roadway and ditch line.

No injuries were reported at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Department was assisted on scene by Jeff’s Towing out of Madisonville, KY, Caldwell County Fire & Rescue, Caldwell County EMS and the State Highway Department.
