Gubernatorial candidate Daniel Cameron will make a stop in Marion Thursday, Aug. 17.

Cameron will be at Marion City Hall at 1:30 p.m., to share his campaign platform.

Marion City Hall is located at 217 South Main in Marion Commons.

Fredonia Festival offers family entertainment

The annual Fredonia Lions Club Summer Festival offered loads of fun Saturday.

Nurse practitioner Beverly Jones (right) had young helpers Ariana Tumero and Carley Montata providing temporary tattoos to visitors of Crittenden Hospital's festival tent.

Bingo, a cake walk, a magician, giveaways, ballgames and live music were part of the festival fun.

COOL IDEA: School buses getting AC

Crittenden County School District has begun a process to put air conditioning on all of its school buses. 

Superintendent Tonya Driver said money from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund will be used to pay for the retrofitting of its route buses and two special trip buses with AC. 

Two new school buses that should be delivered soon will already have air conditioning. Transportation Director Wayne Winters said buses on the longer routes will be among the first to get a cooling system. 

Cost will be $12,000 to $14,000 for each of about a dozen buses that will be retrofitted with AC. 

“It will be a slow process to get them all retrofitted,” the superintendent said. “But we will get there.”

Cool Springs closed again today

Again today, Cool Springs Road in rural Crittenden County will be closed to thru traffic due to work by the County Maintenance Department.

The road will be closed 1.1 miles from the Nunn Switch intersection, just west of the address 2500 Cool Springs Road.

It was also closed on Tuesday.

Bates will marshal Fredonia parade Friday

Longtime Fredonian and Crittenden County Deputy Boyd Bates has been chosen to serve as grand marshal of the Fredonia Valley Parade.

Educated at Fredonia Elementary, Bates graduated from Caldwell County High School before enlisting in the Army National Guard, where he served four years active duty and had a 23-year career. He served deployments for Operation Enduring Freedom in 2003 and Iraqi Freedom in 2005, where he earned at Purple Heart.

Bates was also an ironworker before becoming a law enforcement officer. He joined the sheriff’s department in Crittenden County earlier this year and has served as a Cadiz and Providence patrolman, deputy in Caldwell County and for a time served as sheriff in Caldwell County. He has also provided countless volunteer hours to the Fredonia community.

The parade will be held along Cassidy Avenue in Fredonia starting at 6 p.m., on Friday. Lineup begins at 5:15.

Fredonia Festival will be held Saturday at Buddy Rogers ballpark complete with family fun, food and vendors. 

Lions Club festival is Saturday in Fredonia

The Fredonia Lions Club’s 58th annual Summer Festival is Saturday, Aug. 12 at Buddy Rogers Park behind Akridge Farm Supply.  A parade begins at 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 11

T-ball, minor and major league baseball games begin at 8:30 a.m., Saturday.  

Caldwell County FFA will hold its annual Tractor Pull for kids beginning at 10 a.m. Other events include a cake walk, pet show at 3 p.m., and a washer pitch contest at 4 p.m. 

Music from The Barry Baker Band and Gary Meeks begins at 5 p.m.

Pork butts and chickens will be fresh off the pit Saturday. 

Vendors are invited to sell any appropriate items other than food.  

Profits from the day's event support the charitable programs of the Fredonia Lions including providing eye exams, and eye glasses for those in need, supporting our youth with H.S. scholarships, and many other activities.

BACK TO SCHOOL Events in Crittenden County

 

Crittenden County School Disttrict has announced dates for its Back-To-School events in August. These orientation-style events help parents and students learn important information prior to the start of the new academic year. The event schedules are staggered to allow parents with students in multiple schools time to travel between them. Here are the dates: Preschool 5-6:30 p.m., Aug. 14; Kindergarten Carnival 5-6:30 p.m., Aug. 15; Crittenden Elementary School 5-6 p.m., last names A-L and 6-7 names M-Z on Aug. 17; Crittenden Middle School last names M-Z 4:30-5:45 p.m. and names A-L 5:45-7 p.m., on Aug. 17; and Crittenden High School last names M-Z 4:30-5:45 p.m., and names A-L 5:45-7 p.m., on Aug. 17.

Enduro race is on schedule

Despite heavy rains on Friday, Lions Club leaders say the annual Enduro Derby will be held on schedule tonight at the fairgrounds.

Enduro begins at 7 p.m., Friday. 

The Demolition Derby will begin at 7 p.m., Saturday, including three-man teams and lawn mower events. 

Gate fees for both nights will be $15 for 16 and up, $5 for 6-15 and 5-under is free.

Hit-and-run suspect has ties to Marion

Details are emerging about a fatal hit-and-run case in Calvert City, and there appears to be at least some loose Marion ties to a suspect. 

Calvert City Police arrested Raymond Jarvis, 45, on Thursday, Aug. 3 after he was questioned at the police department. Investigators believe Jarvis had recently moved to Calvert City, having been residing in Marshall County for only a few weeks prior to when the incident occurred at about dawn on the morning of Aug. 1.

Jarvis is jailed in Marshall County on a $25,000 bond, facing a Class D felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident and failure to render aid with death or serious injury possible. 

Eighteen-year-old Mercedeys Culligan of Calvert City, who was walking to work for her job at Dairy Queen, was allegedly struck by a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Jarvis. The teen died at the scene, according to the police report.

A golf tournament to benefit the Mary Hall Ruddiman Shelter will be held at the Heritage Golf Course in Marion Saturday, Aug. 12.

Cost is $200 per four-person team. Mulligans and skirts will be available for purchase.

County clerk will stop selling KDFWR licenses

Effective later this month, Crittenden County Clerk's Office will no longer sell hunting and fishing licenses. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is adding a 3 percent service fee to all licenses and permits and will no longer allow outlets to charge credit card fees to cover the costs third-party vendors charge for processing card payments. The agency also requires outlets to continue allowing the purchase of licenses and permits with a credit or debit card.

 "Our vendor does not offer the option of not charging the additional fees when a debit or credit card is used, and we cannot prevent customers from using a card to make the purchase of licenses or permits," said County Clerk Daryl Tabor. "Therefore, we have no choice but to stop offering the service as of Aug. 15, when the changes take effect. We hate to eliminate one of our longtime services, but there is really no other option at this point. We do not expect it to be an inconvenience for many, as we sold only 45 licenses or permits in all of 2022 and only 24 so far this year."

Emmanuel has VBS, Back to School event

Emmanuel Baptist Church is combining VBS with a Back to School Bash Monday, Aug. 7-Wednesday, Aug. 9.

The church, located on Hillcrest Drive in Greenwood Heights subdivision, will offer a nightly meal followed by Bible study, crafts and music.

Family night is Wednesday night and will include inflatables, popcorn, snow cones and free school supplies.

Union VBS moved to church Thursday

The location for Thursday's day camp VBS hosted by Union Baptist Church has been changed.

Due to anticipated inclement weather, the event has been moved 

to the church located on Levias Road between Marion and Salem.

VBS participation is for children entering pre-k through sixth 

grade.

Fair events conclude with demo derby

Two derbies this weekend will satisfy the fascination with wrecking cars during the annual Crittenden County Fair.

The Enduro Derby is Friday night at the Lions Club Fairgrounds, followed by the Demolition Derby Saturday night.

Both events begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $15 for 16-years and up.

Also on Friday, the Crittenden County Extension Service will pay tribute to the late Larry Parish as he is inducted posthumously into the Crittenden County Agriculture Hall of Fame.
