Murder case lead story in this week's paper

The murder case involving suspect Cindy L. Hutchinson is the headline story in this week's printed edition of The Critttenden Press. A preliminary hearing was conducted last week in Crittenden District Court and several new details were disclosed.

Project Graduation barbecue sale Friday night

Project Graduation will be raising money by selling pork chop sandwiches at a tailgate party before Crittenden County's Friday night's football game against Paducah Tilghman.

Barbecue sandwich, chips, drink and dessert will cost $5 outside the main gate at Rocket Stadium.

Paving on Main Street done today

It looks like paving on Main Street will be finished sometime late this afternoon. The contractor had expected the work might take a week, but crews have been ahead of schedule.

Johnie Gray Marshall, 84, of Marion died Monday at Dawson Springs Nursing and Rehab. Services are Thursday at Gilbert Funeral Home in Marion.

Progress reports go home with students

Progress reports for the first grading period were sent home today with Crittenden County students.

Parents may meet with teachers between 3:30-5:30 p.m., Wednesday. No appointment is necessary.

Lloyd C. Williams, 83, of Salem died Friday. Services are scheduled for Thursday at Gilbert Funeral Home in Marion.

Rockets vs. Union postponed

Due to threatening weather, the Crittenden County Rockets' game against Union County has been rescheduled to 7 p.m., Saturday. Everyone who paid entry into tonight's game should present their ticket to be admitted Saturday at no charge. Young Rocket Night will be postponed until next Friday, Sept. 14.

Paving Monday morning in Marion; parking alert

The contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans asphalt paving along Main Street in Marion starting at 6:30 a.m., Monday. Paving was originally planned at night, but there has been a change.

This daytime paving project will require a high level of public cooperation due to on-street parking in a three-block area of the Marion downtown business district.  By starting at the U.S. 60 and U.S. 641 Intersection and moving eastward, the crew hopes to be through the downtown area by mid-morning on Monday.

All vehicles parked on Main Street downtown should be removed by 5:30 a.m., Monday.

Motorists should be alert for one lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers.

The work is expected to take about a week to complete, weather permitting. Paving will go from Tabor's Towing and Repair to the Rush Creek Bridge at the city sewer plant.

Donna K. Barnes, 67, of Marion died Thursday at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.

Services are scheduled for Sunday at Gilbert Funeral Home in Marion.

Lola Mae Doom Patton, 91, of Fredonia died Wednesday at Crittenden Hospital. Services are Saturday at Lakeland Funeral in Eddyville.

No garden picking or distribution Friday

Due to muddy conditions – thanks to recent rains – there will be no Victory Garden distribution or picking Friday.

Piney Fork Road closed

UPDATE: 2:40 p.m. - Roadway is open to one lane of traffic. Flaggers are on site. Both lanes should be restored by 4 p.m.

KY 506/Piney Fork Road is closed near mile point 6.5 in CRITTENDEN County due to downed utility lines.

This is on KY 506 near the Grandview Estates Subdivision a mile or two east of the Marion city limits. 

Phone lines in the area had been reported hanging down in the area overnight.  Sometime this morning a passing truck snagged the lines and pulled down a couple of utility poles.  An AT&T line crew has arrived at the site and is preparing to start repairs.

Passenger vehicles that normally travel KY 506/Piney Fork Road may self-detour via Pleasant Hill Road to KY 120 or via Weldon Road to US 641.   Trucks should follow appropriate state routes.

Estimated duration:  3 hours.

Grace Mae Larue, 84, of Salem, died Monday at Crittenden Hospital. Myers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Judge sends Hutchinson murder case to grand jury

The woman accused of killing 89-year-old Jim Roberts at his Marion home in July told police that another man did it. Cindy L. Hutchinson, 50, of Marion allegedly made statements to a Kentucky State Police detective, claiming that another man hit Roberts in the head with a skillet.

Hutchinson's statement and other evidence was presented during more than an hour of testimony Wednesday at a preliminary hearing in Crittenden District Court.

Following the hearing, District Judge Daniel Heady said there was probable cause to bind the case over to the Oct. 1 meeting of the Crittenden County Grand Jury. Hutchinson is accused of theft and capital murder. She remains held at Crittenden Detention Center on a $1 million cash bond.

Show your college colors Friday

 This is College & Career Readiness Week in Crittenden County Schools. Faculty and staff are putting an extra emphasis on college and career readiness and there are several activities going on.

On Friday, the schools are asking local residents, businesspeople and others show their colors by dressing college colors or attire. Email a photo to Holley White at the school system's central office and she will bring you something in return.

What says that if you see students this week strike up a conversation about college and careers. Encourage them to be ready to join the workforce with whatever tools they can gather, starting with furthering their education.

Singing Friday at Senior Center in Marion

Crittenden County Senior Citizens Center is hosting special guests Frank and Shirley Pasteur with the Old Tyme Band at 10:30 a.m., Friday. This is event was originally scheduled on a different day. They couple will be singing golden oldies from teh 40s, 50s and 60s.

Young Rockets Night Friday

Friday night will be Young Rockets Night at the high school football game. All players in Junior Pro and middle school programs will get in free if they wear their game jersey to the Crittenden County vs. Union County game. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Special City Council meeting Wednesday night

The City of Marion will hold a special meeting Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

On the agenda is a second reading of the proposed Property Tax Rates for 2012, a resolution to support coal miners and retirees and consideration of a bid award to Wilkins Construction for the West Elm sidewalk project.
