CCHS FCA hosts blood drive

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Crittenden County High School will host a blood drive from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Wednesday in the Rocket Arena conference room. Community participation is encouraged. Donors must weigh 115 pounds, have eaten a full meal before donating blood and know current medications. Please have photo ID available.  Currently, the Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center has less than one day's reserve of O negative blood. In an emergency, O negative blood may be given to anyone, regardless of blood type.

Championship Banner Project Underway at CCHS

Crittenden County High School is on a mission to create some championship banners to hang in Rocket Arena.

With the encouragement from Superintendent Vince Clark, the CCHS athletic department and student council have undertaken the project to hang banners in the gym, recognizing district, regional and state champions in athletics. (See current listing below).

Crittenden County Athletics Director Sean Thompson said a rendering of the banners has been completed and much of the research has been done. He credited school librarian and student council sponsor Jennifer Bell with helping ramrod the project. Additionally, The Crittenden Press and local sports historian Andy Hunt have been instrumental in providing information for the undertaking.

Thompson said the original plan was to have the banners hung by graduation this spring. However, some setbacks may postpone their unveiling until the next school year.

While mainline sports are among those that will be recognized, there is an effort to find records for cheerleading, band and perhaps other activities.

Anyone with additional information that would benefit this project is encouraged to contact Thompson or Bell at the high school.

Quota Elk Application Deadline is Tuesday

Hunters have until midnight (Eastern time) on Tuesday, April 30, to apply for Kentucky’s quota elk hunt. Applications are available online at fw.ky.gov, or by clicking this link.

Hunts are open to Kentucky residents and non-residents. Adults and youth may apply. The cost is $10 per application. Although hunters can apply for multiple permits, they may only be drawn for one.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to hunt the largest herd east of the Rocky Mountains – an estimated 13,000 free-roaming elk in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. Last year, nearly 36,000 people applied for the hunt.

Minor injuries in bus crash at Rosebud

A bus crash in the Rosebud area of Crittenden County on U.S. 60 East at about 3 p.m. has resulted in a couple of very minor injuries.

A westbound Miller Transportation passenger bus making its way from Evansville, Ind., to Paducah slipped off the roadway entering a curve and traveled about 100 yards across a ditch and through the front yard of Ronnie Watson's home just east of Rosebud Church. Passengers said the bus rocked back and forth several times before coming to a rest across the driveway of the home. The bus became stuck in the mud and was forced to wait a couple of hours before a tow truck could get the vehicle back on the roadway to complete its regular run.

Crittenden EMS responded, seeing a handful of patients and clearing them all. Once was outfitted with a cervical collar for precautionary reasons.

The bus was carrying 12 passengers, most of whom were headed home to the Paducah area from various locations.

Traffic was reduced to one lane, but the highway was never closed.

Wreck blocks road, cuts power to 998

A wreck on Ky. 91 North just outside of Marion around 9 a.m. cut power to almost 1,000
Kenergy Corp. customers in Crittenden County and blocked the highway to through traffic.

UPDATE: Power has been restored to the affected areas and the roadway is open. The driver was identified as Jamison Shaffer of Cave In Rock, Ill. According to Deputy Agent, he was treated and released from Crittenden Community Hospital in Marion and subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

ORIGINAL POST: Ky. 91 North just outside of Marion will be blocked and a good portion of northwest Crittenden County without power for a couple of hours while a Kenergy Corp. crew replaces a utility pole taken down by a wreck.

According to Crittenden County Sheriff's Deputy Ray Agent, a white Chevy Z71 pickup traveling north on the highway dropped off the right shoulder of the road and overcorrected, which sent the vehicle rolling off the lefthand side of the roadway, clipping an overhead feeder pole and dropping the power line across the roadway. According to Kenergy's online outage center, almost 1,000 customers are without power, including Sheridan and Tolu.

The driver of the truck, who Agent could not name at the time, was taken Crittenden Hospital for treatment of injuries. The wreck occurred around 9 a.m.

A Kenergy crew is on the scene. No exact duration of the road closure or outage is available, but authorities on the scene around 9:30 a.m. said it could be 2 hours.
