Youth basketball starts Saturday

Little league boys’ basketball begins Saturday at Rocket Arena. Workouts and competition will be held each Saturday until Dec. 19. Players in K-2 will start at 9 a.m., and players in grades 3-6 will start at 10:15 a.m. The fee is $15 to play or $20 to play and receive a T-shirt. School dismissing early Friday

Crittenden County Schools will be letting out an hour early on Friday to allow time for safe travel by students and staff to Bardstown where the Rocket football team will be playing Bethlehem in the Class A Regional Semifinals.

All classes will be dismissed at 2pm Friday.  Buses will run starting at 2pm, just like they normally do at 3pm, said Superintendent Vince Clark.

"This will allow time for our staff and students to travel safely to Bardstown which is a 3 hour trip, plus we lose an hour by entering the eastern time zone.  The team bus and associated staff will be leaving at 1pm," the superintendent said. 

Governor orders flags to half-staff

Gov. Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff Wednesday in honor of a Richmond police officer killed in the line of duty.

Daniel Ellis died Nov. 6, less than two days after being shot while searching an apartment for a robbery suspect.

Ellis, a seven-year veteran of the force, is survived by his wife, Katie, and 4-year-old son, Luke.

The officer's funeral will be Wednesday.

UPDATE: The Rockets lost 6-0 to Morganfield in the championship game Sunday

Crittenden County's third- and fourth-grade Junior Pro football team will play at 2pm today at Sturgis for the championship of the West Kentucky Junior Pro Football League.

The young Rockets beat previoulsy undefeated Caldwell County Saturday night on a touchdown by Micah Newcom with no time left on the clock.

Marion man killed in motorcycle crash

A Crittenden County man was killed in a motorcycle wreck near the Crittenden-Webster County line this morning.

According to Kentucky State Police, Robert A. Topp, 60, of Marion died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle wreck on Ky. 132 about 13 miles east of Marion around 8:20 a.m. He was flown from the scene to an Evansville, Ind., hospital where he later died.

What's news this week in Crittenden County...

Over the past week, hundreds of Crittenden County students have participated in Color Runs at Marion-Crittenden County Park and on their campuses. The events are designed to encourage children to be active and to promote healthy lifestyles. A Color Run is simply a gimmick, aimed at getting regular runners or joggers and novices to enjoy an untimed distance event together. Superintendent Vince Clark was among those participating in Tuesday’s high school run. He said CCHS Principal Curtis Brown developed the idea of the Color Runs last year during Health Awareness Week. Brown is an avid runner, triathlete and an ambassador of active living.

Big night for GOP in Kentucky

Republicans carried Crittenden County in today's election for statewide offices and almost carried the state. The GOP took four of the six races.

Republican Matt Bevin bested Attorney General Jack Conway in the headline race for governor, making him the first GOP governor of Kentucky since Ernie Fletcher left office in 2007 and only eighth since the party was founded in 1854. Bevin's running mate, Jenean Hampton, becomes the first person of color to hold a statewide office in Kentucky.

In downticket races, the biggest upset of the night was the loss of incumbent Democrat Adam Edelen to Mike Harmon for Auditor. Meantime, incumbent Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes and Democrat Andy Beshear, the son of outgoing Gov. Steve Beshear, narrowly won their respective races for Secretary of State and Attorney General.

The two biggest vote-getters of the day, Republicans Allison Ball and Ryan Quarles, won their races for Treasurer and Commissioner of Agriculture, respectively.

Voter turnout a bit higher than expected

At polling places across the county, voter turnout may be a bit higher than expected, but it's still low.

Perhaps 20 percent of registered voters are casting ballots today. Although a fraction of those eligible, it is still a bit higher than some predicted.

On the ballot are candidates for governor and other statewide offices.
